The 5-Minute Wind-Down Ritual (That Actually Works)
Share
I'm not going to tell you to take a bath. I'm going to tell you to light a candle and put on some lotion. Five minutes. That's it.
After a full day of emails, decisions, and keeping everything moving, your brain needs a clear signal that it's time to switch off. Not a big production. Just a small, easy moment that says "work is done, now it's my time."
That's what I started doing a while back, and it stuck because it’s actually doable. No hour-long routines. No fancy setup. Just a candle and lotion combo that helps me leave the day behind.
Why five minutes is enough
Your brain loves simple cues. Light the same candle, reach for the same lotion, and it starts to recognize the pattern: "Okay, we're slowing down now." It’s a small transition from work mode to personal time without adding another task to your list.
Here’s how it looks in my house on a regular night:
Step 1: Light the candle
Pick one with a scent you actually like. Something coastal or fresh that doesn’t overpower the room. I go for ours because they burn clean and the concrete vessel looks nice even when it’s not lit. Two seconds to light it and the whole space feels different.
Step 2: Smooth on the lotion
While the candle is going, smooth on body lotion. Even if it’s just your arms and legs. That’s literally it. Our formula is simple. Just the stuff that actually does something. The whole thing takes maybe three minutes total.

Make it your own
Keep it by your bed or favorite chair so there’s zero friction. Same candle, same lotion every night if you want. The consistency is what makes it work. Some nights I do it right after dinner. Other nights it’s the last thing before I climb into bed. No pressure, no perfect timing.
This isn’t about adding self-care to your to-do list. It’s about creating a tiny bridge between the busy day and the rest of your evening. Something small that actually fits real life.
If you’ve been looking for an evening wind-down routine or a candle ritual before bed that doesn’t feel like one more thing to do, try this.
Light, lotion, breathe. Five minutes. Your brain will start to thank you after a few nights.
