How Scent Actually Changes the Way You Work From Home

Working from home sounds great until you realize there's no commute to mark the start of your day, no walk to the car to mark the end, and somehow it's 7pm and you're still at the kitchen table wondering why you feel like a wrung-out dish towel.

That was me for a while. The thing that finally helped wasn't a new planner or a better chair. It was scent.

Not in a woo woo way. In a "my brain needed a cue and a candle gave it one" way.

Why Scent Works When Nothing Else Sticks

When your office and your living room are the same room, your brain doesn't get the memo about when work starts and stops. Scent gives it one. Light a candle, you're working. Blow it out, you're done. That's the whole trick.

Here's how I actually use it day to day, from my desk in Merritt Island with Bruno asleep on my feet.

Morning: Citrus Tide

This is the one I light first thing, usually before I even open my laptop. Bright, a little zippy, smells like the version of a morning you'd actually want to have. On slow mornings it does more for me than a second cup of coffee.

Midday Reset: Foggy Mist

Around 1 or 2pm when the day starts to drag, I switch to Foggy Mist. Clean, a little aquatic, it cuts through the afternoon fog (pun fully intended). Just 30 to 60 minutes of a different scent in the room and the second half of the day feels like its own thing instead of a continuation of the morning slog.

The Travel Diffuser on the Desk

If I'm bouncing between rooms or don't want an open flame near the doggie, I keep a travel diffuser within arm's reach. Two or three drops, done. It's quieter than a candle but does the same job; gives me a small signal that this is the working part of the day.

One Thing to Try This Week

Pick one candle. Use it only during work hours for a few days. Light it when you sit down, blow it out when you're finished. See what happens.

You don't need a whole system. You need one cue your brain can learn.
